Francis Scott Key was born on August 1st, 1779, and died on January 11th 1843.  Sir Francis Scott key is the Author of The Star Spangled Banner.  He was raised by a wealthy family in Maryland.

Francis Scott Key Biography:
Francis Scott Key went to grammar school in Annapolis and graduated when he was 17 years old.  He later went on to study law, and eventually opened his own law firm in Georgetown.  By 1814, Francis Scott Key had appeared on the Supreme Court several times.

One of Francis Scott Key's close friends had become imprisoned in the War of 1812 and Francis, being a lawyer, decided to try and speak with the British to have him releasesed. At the time, the British were in Chesapeake Bay, so Francis Scott Key left for Baltimore.  He met up with an agent who arranged prisoner exchanges, and the two of them took a boat to meet the British Royal Navy.  Once there, the British agreed to release his friend but they were ordered to stay in the bay until after the British attacked Fort McHenry.  This is where Francis was inspired to write a poem describing the battle.  The poem war originally titled "Defense of Fort McHenry" but war re-named the "Star Spangled Banner" by the public.  The poem turned song, became the US National Anthem in 1931.  Francis died in 1843 of pleurisy.
